Tank, Fuel: Removal

WARNING:

The fuel system is under constant pressure even with engine OFF. Until the fuel pressure has been properly relieved from the system, do not attempt to open the fuel system.

  1. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank. Refer to DRAINING FUEL TANK  .
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the rear seat. Refer to SEAT, REAR, REMOVAL .

  4. Remove the carpet piece covering the access covers for fuel pumps.
  5. Remove the screws and lift up on the fuel pump module access cover (3, 4) and disconnect the wire harness connector (2, 6).

  6. Disconnect the vapor line (1, 3) and the fuel line (2) quick connect fittings. Refer to DESCRIPTION  .
  7. Remove the exhaust pipes from the vehicle. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST, REMOVAL .
  8. If equipped with All-Wheel Drive (AWD), remove the rear propeller shaft.

    NOTE:

    Right side shown, left side similar.

  9. If equipped AWD, remove the bolts (2) and the right and left fuel tank shields (3).
  10. Remove the right and left underbody shield.

  11. Loosen the clamp (2) and disconnect the fuel filler tube (3) from fuel tank (1).
  12. Disconnect the fuel filler tube vent line and the fuel tank recirculation line quick connect fittings. Refer to DESCRIPTION  .
  13. Use a transmission jack to support the fuel tank (1).

  14. Remove the left fuel tank strap bolt (1).

  15. Remove the right fuel tank strap bolt (1).

  16. Remove the bolt (1) and the left fuel tank strap (3).
  17. Remove the bolt (1) and the right fuel tank strap (2).
  18. Lower the fuel tank far enough to access and disconnect the underbody wire harness connector from the fuel pump module.
  19. Continue lowering the fuel tank for removal.
  20. If the fuel tank is being replaced, remove the main and auxiliary fuel pump modules from the fuel tank for transfer to the new tank. Refer to MODULE, FUEL PUMP, REMOVAL .
  21. If fuel tank is being replaced, remove the shield from the fuel tank for transfer to the new tank.
