Cover(S), Cylinder Head: Removal: Left
The magnetic timing wheels (1) must not come in contact with magnets (pickup tools, trays, etc.) or any other strong magnetic field. This will destroy the timing wheels ability to correctly relay camshaft position to the camshaft position sensor.
- Evacuate the A/C system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Drain the cooling system.
- Remove the air cleaner body, resonator and upper intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, REMOVAL .
- Cover the open intake ports (1) to prevent debris from entering the engine.
- Remove the insulator (2) from the LH cylinder head cover.NOTE:
Mark the variable valve timing solenoid connectors (2) with a paint pen or equivalent so that they may be reinstalled in their original locations.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors (2) from the variable valve timing solenoids on the left cylinder head cover.
- Disengage three wire harness retainers (1) from the left cylinder head cover.
- Mark the variable valve timing solenoids (2 and 4) with a paint pen or equivalent so that they may be reinstalled in their original locations.
- Remove the variable valve timing solenoids.
- Disconnect the left Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor (5).
- Disengage one main wire harness retainer (2) from the cylinder head cover and one main wire harness retainer (4) from the cylinder head cover mounting stud.NOTE:
The RH CMP sensor is shown in illustration, the LH CMP sensor is similar. If removing both RH and LH CMP sensors, mark the sensors so they can be installed in their original locations.
- Remove the camshaft position sensor. Refer to SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSITION, REMOVAL
.
- Disengage two injection/ignition harness retainers (1) from the left cylinder head cover.
- Remove the ignition coils (2). Refer to COIL, IGNITION, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the nut (3) and separate the suction/liquid line manifold (2) from the Internal Heat Exchanger (IHX) (1).
- Remove the nuts that secure the A/C lines (1) to the IHX.
- Remove the heater line (3) support nuts (1).
- Disengage the wiring harness (2) and position aside.
- Separate the upper radiator hose (2) from the radiator inlet pipe (1).
- Remove the front bumper fascia. Refer to FASCIA, FRONT, REMOVAL .
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL .
- Remove the left side catalytic converter. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the A/C line support brace nut (1) and position the brace (2) away.
- Remove the intake manifold left/forward support bracket stud bolt (2).
- Remove the intake manifold left/rearward support bracket stud bolt (2).
- Remove the A/C lines (2) at the A/C compressor (3).
- Lower the vehicle.NOTE:
The intake manifold support brackets are fastened to the A/C line bracket and is removed as an assembly.
- Using care, remove the A/C line (1) from the vehicle.
- Position the heater line and the cooling system pipe aside.
- Loosen ten cylinder head cover mounting bolts (1) and two stud bolts (2) and remove the cylinder head cover.
- Remove and discard the cylinder head cover gasket (1).
- The spark plug tube seals (2) can be reused if not damaged.CAUTION:
Do not use oil based liquids, wire brushes, abrasive wheels or metal scrapers to clean the engine gasket surfaces. Use only isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, along with plastic or wooden scrapers. Improper gasket surface preparation may result in engine fluid leakage.
- Remove all residual sealant (1) from the cylinder head, timing chain cover and cylinder head cover mating surfaces. Refer to ENGINE GASKET SURFACE PREPARATION .
