Timing Chain

Remove the timing chain cover. Refer to REMOVAL .
Inspect the timing chain for stretching prior to removal. Refer to INSPECTION .

Position the number one cylinder piston to top-dead-center on the compression stroke.
NOTE:
If the timing chain plated links (2) can no longer be seen, the timing chain links corresponding to the timing marks must be marked prior to removal if the chain is to be reused.
Mark chain link (2) corresponding to crankshaft timing mark (1).

While maintaining this alignment, verify that the camshaft dowel (2) is at the 12 o'clock position. The dowel center line (1) will be 90° from the horizontal surface line at the top of the cylinder head (3).

Mark the chain links (1) corresponding to camshaft and crankshaft timing marks (2).

Reset the timing chain tensioner. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

Hold the camshaft stationary by the wrench flats (1).

Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt (1).
Once the sprocket is clear of the alignment dowel, lower the sprocket and remove the timing chain.

If required, remove the tensioner arm bolt (3), bushing and tensioner arm (4).
If required, remove the fixed chain guide bolts (2) and the timing chain guide (1).
