Air Bag, Side Curtain: Removal: Airbag

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the side curtain airbag, or becoming entrapped between the side curtain airbag cushion and the headliner. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.

NOTE:

The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged side curtain airbag (also known as Side AirBag Inflatable Curtain/SABIC). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE . If the side curtain airbag has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before continuing service.
Remove the headliner from the vehicle. Refer to HEADLINER, REMOVAL .
Remove the screw that secures the SABIC (1) rear tether to the inner roof rail (2).
Remove the two screws that secure the SABIC mounting tabs to the inner roof rail above the C (3) and D-pillars.
Disengage the plastic push-in retainers that secure the SABIC to the C and D-pillar deploy bracket (4) above the C and D-pillars.

Remove the nut (3) that secures the SABIC (1) front tether to the inner A-pillar (2) near the belt line.
Remove the two screws that secure the SABIC mounting tabs to the inner A-pillar and the inner roof rail above the A-pillar.
Disengage the plastic push-in retainers that secure the SABIC to the inner A-pillar and the inner roof rail above the A-pillar.

Disconnect the body wire harness connector (3) from the connector receptacle at the rear of the SABIC inflator located on the inner roof rail (2) above the B-pillar (6). The SABIC connector insulator is secured by integral latches and a Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock to the airbag inflator connector receptacle. Pull the lock straight out from the connector insulator, then pull the insulator straight out from the connector receptacle to disengage and disconnect it.
Remove the two screws (5) that secure the SABIC mounting tab to the inner roof rail above the rear door opening and the inflator bracket above the B-pillar.
Disengage the plastic push-in retainers that secure the SABIC to the inner roof rail.
Disengage the metal hooks that secure the inflator mounting bracket from the slots in the inner roof rail.
Remove the SABIC and inflator from the vehicle as a unit.
