Air Bag, Seat: Removal: Rear

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

NOTE:

The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged Seat AirBag (SAB). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE . If the SAB has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
Remove the rear seat cushion from the vehicle. Refer to SEAT, REAR, REMOVAL .
Disengage the outboard end of the trim cover from the rear seat cushion.
Remove the screw (3) that secures the rear SAB tether anchor clip (1) to the outboard rear corner of the seat cushion frame (2).

Remove the screw (3) that secures the plastic SAB initiator cover to the bracket on the outboard front corner of the seat cushion frame (1).
Move the plastic SAB initiator cover far enough to access and disconnect the seat wire harness connector (5) from the rear SAB inflator initiator. Pull the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock straight out from the connector insulator, then pull the insulator straight out from the connector receptacle to disengage and disconnect it.
Remove the two nuts that secure the studs (2) of the SAB inflator to the bracket near the outboard front corner of the seat cushion frame.
Carefully disengage the SAB from the nylon pouch (intensifier) and slide the SAB out of the pouch. Be careful not to tear or damage the pouch or the trim cover.
Remove the SAB from the seat cushion frame.
