Diagnostic Test

  1. ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Inspect the vehicle for aftermarket accessories that may exceed the Generator System output.

    NOTE:

    The battery must be fully charged.

    NOTE:

    The Generator belt tension and condition must be checked before continuing.

    NOTE:

    Inspect the Charging System Fuse in the PDC.

    NOTE:

    Diagnose and repair any Alternator control circuit DTCs before continuing with this test procedure.

    1. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
      CAUTION:

      Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    2. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) in line with the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Using a Voltmeter, measure the voltage on the (A908) Fused B+ circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.
      WARNING:

      When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    4. Start the engine
    5. With the scan tool, monitor the Generator Sense voltage output.

      Are the two readings within 0.2 volts of each other?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  2
  2. CHECK THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR OUTPUT CABLES 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Inspect the Generator Output post for corrosion and looseness.
    3. Inspect the Battery Positive and Negative Cables and ends for corrosion and looseness.
    4. Inspect the Battery Positive post at the PDC for corrosion and looseness.
    5. Inspect the engine ground for corrosion and looseness.
    6. If any of the cables appear suspect, perform a voltage drop test on the suspect cable or cables.
      NOTE:

      The voltage measurement should not be above 0.2 volts during the voltage drop test on the cables.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      • Perform the appropriate repair.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK FOR EXCESSIVE RESISTANCE IN THE (A908) FUSED B+ CIRCUIT 
    1. Perform a voltage drop test on the (A908) Fused B+ circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and the PDC.
    2. Using a Voltmeter, probe the GPEC Adaptor with the Negative lead of the Voltmeter and back probe the (A908) Battery Feed circuit at the PDC with the Positive lead of the Voltmeter.
      WARNING:

      When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    3. Start the engine
    4. Monitor the Voltmeter.

      Is the voltage above 0.2 volts?

      Yes 

      • Repair the excessive resistance in the (A908) Battery Feed circuit between the PCM and PDC.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) 
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Generator and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Generator and the Powertrain Control Module connectors.
    4. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were there any problems found?

      Yes 

      No
