Test 33A: Driver Seat Belt Switch Short To Ground
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Prior to performing any air bag system test, go to PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform TEST VER-1: AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST
after all repairs unless otherwise directed.
Air Bag Control Module (ACM) harness connectors C1 and C2 are identical, except for wire colors and terminal usage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .

- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DRBIII, determine if DRIVER SEAT BELT SWITCH SHORT TO GROUND is active or stored Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If DRIVER SEAT BELT SWITCH SHORT TO GROUND is an active DTC, go to next step. If DRIVER SEAT BELT SWITCH SHORT TO GROUND is a stored DTC, go to TEST 1B: REPAIRING STORED CODES .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect driver-side front seat belt switch connector. See SEAT BELT SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect DRBIII to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. On DRBIII display, read active DTCs. If DRBIII displays DRIVER SEAT BELT SWITCH CIRCUIT OPEN, replace driver-side seat belt switch. If DRBIII does not display DRIVER SEAT BELT SWITCH CIRCUIT OPEN, go to next step.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect ACM connector C2. See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between Dark Green wire (line 1 circuit) and Light Blue wire (line 2 circuit) on harness side of seat belt switch connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short between Dark Green and Light Blue wires. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Measure resistance in Dark Green wire between ground and harness side of seat belt switch connector. Measure resistance in Light Blue wire between ground and harness side of seat belt switch connector. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms in either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace ACM.
