Test TC-114A - Park/Neutral (P/N) Switch Stuck In Park Or In Gear (DTC 37/P1899)

CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, you should see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . You should also perform the VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A  after each repair.
NOTE: This procedure checks vehicle harness for shorts and opens between PCM and P/N position switch.
  1. Using scan tool, read Park/Neutral (P/N) switch input state. Move gear selector in and out of Park and Reverse while observing scan tool display. If scan tool does not display P/N and D/R, go to step 4). If scan tool displays P/N and D/R, go to next step.
  2. Condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. PARK/NEUTRAL SWITCH FAILURE DTC sets if Powertrain Control Module (PCM) senses transmission is in Drive, with vehicle speed more than 8 MPH, engine speed more than 992 RPM, throttle position sensor closed and MAP sensor outside of predetermined parameter during 2 driving cycles. Possible causes are: defective connector terminals or connector wires, disconnected wiring harness, defective P/N position switch, mechanical transmission problem or defective PCM. Go to next step.
  3. Inspect all related wiring and connectors. Repair wiring and connectors as necessary. If wiring and connectors are okay, you should see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION  in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS JEEP, PICKUP & RAM VAN. Test is complete. Perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A .
  4. Turn ignition off. Place gear selector in Park. Disconnect PCM connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary. If connectors and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance at terminal No. 6 on PCM Black connector. Move gear selector in and out of Park and Reverse while observing scan tool display. If resistance switches from less than 5 ohms to more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance does not switch from less than 5 ohms to more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  6. If resistance is not at less than 5 ohms at all times, go to step 8). If resistance is less than 5 ohms at all times, disconnect P/N switch connector. Go to next step.
  7. Check resistance at terminal No. 6 on PCM Black connector Move gear selector in and out of Park and Reverse while observing scan tool display. If resistance stays at less than 5 ohms at all times, repair short to ground in P/N position switch sense circuit. If resistance does not stay at less than 5 ohms at all times repair or replace stuck P/N switch.
  8. Disconnect P/N switch connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  9. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 2 on P/N switch connector and terminal No. 6 on PCM Black connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace P/N switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open P/N switch sense circuit.
