Test TC-31A - Radiator Fan Relay Circuit (DTC 35)
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Plymouth Sundance, 1994 Plymouth Acclaim, 1994 Dodge Spirit, 1994 Dodge Shadow, and 1994 Chrysler LeBaron. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
For circuit and connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION DIRECTORY
. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
- Using DRB, erase trouble codes. Using DRB, actuate radiator fan relay. If radiator fan relay is clicking, go to next step. If radiator fan relay is not clicking, go to step 5).
- At this time, condition required to set trouble code is not present. RADIATOR FAN RELAY CIRCUIT trouble code sets if an open or short is detected in radiator fan relay control circuit. Possible causes are: radiator fan relay coil open or shorted, open in radiator fan relay Dark Blue wire, open or short in radiator fan relay Dark Blue/Pink wire, or inoperative circuit driver in PCM. Go to next step.
- Inspect all related wiring and connectors and repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2 . If no problems are found with wiring and connectors, go to next step.
- While still actuating radiator fan relay, wiggle wiring harness from radiator fan relay to PCM. If relay stopped clicking while wiggling wiring harness, repair wiring and connectors as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If relay did not stop clicking while wiggling wiring harness, see INACTIVE TROUBLE CODE CONDITION . Perform TEST VER-2.
- Disconnect radiator fan relay. Put DRB in voltmeter mode. Using DRB, check voltage on radiator fan relay connector Dark Blue wire (AA and AP bodies) or Dark Blue/White wire (AJ body). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in appropriate wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between radiator fan relay terminals. See Fig 1 . If resistance is more than 100 ohms, replace radiator fan relay. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Put DRB in ohmmeter mode. Using DRB, check resistance of radiator fan relay connector Dark Blue/Pink wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Blue/Pink wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Dark Blue/Pink wire between A/C clutch relay connector and PCM connector terminal No. 31. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Blue/Pink wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2.
