Test TC-26A - EVAP Solenoid Circuit (DTC 31)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Plymouth Sundance, 1994 Plymouth Acclaim, 1994 Dodge Spirit, 1994 Dodge Shadow, and 1994 Chrysler LeBaron. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit and connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION DIRECTORY  . For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  1. Using DRB, erase trouble codes. Using DRB, actuate evaporative purge solenoid. Using DRB, read trouble codes. If DRB does not display EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT, go to next step. If DRB displays EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT, go to step 6).
  2. At this time, condition required to set trouble code is not present. EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code sets if solenoid is not in its proper state when monitored by Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Possible causes are: open or shorted evaporative solenoid Pink/Black wire, open evaporative solenoid Dark Blue wire, open or shorted evaporative solenoid, or PCM failure. Go to next step.
  3. Inspect wiring and connectors. Repair as required. Perform TEST VER-2. If wiring and connectors are okay, using DRB, read trouble codes. Ensure actuator test is still running.
  4. Wiggle wiring harness from solenoid to PCM. If EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code returns, repair wiring harness where wiggling caused problem to appear. Perform TEST VER-2  .
  5. If EVAP SOLENOID CIRCUIT trouble code does not return when wiring harness is wiggled, see INACTIVE TROUBLE CODE CONDITION  . Test is complete. Perform TEST VER-2.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect evaporative purge solenoid electrical connector. Turn ignition on. Place DRB in voltmeter mode. Using DRB, check voltage of evaporative purge solenoid connector Dark Blue.
  7. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in appropriate wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Go to next step.
  8. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Pink/Black wire between PCM connector terminal No. 52 and evaporative purge solenoid connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
  9. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, place DRB in ohmmeter mode. Using DRB, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 52 (Pink/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Pink/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-2  . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, reconnect evaporative purge solenoid connector. Turn ignition on. Place DRB in voltmeter mode.
  10. Using DRB, check voltage of PCM connector terminal No. 52 (Pink/Black wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace evaporative purge solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2.
