Trans. Overdrive Solenoid Circuit
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1995 Dodge Ram Wagon, 1995 Dodge Ram Van, 1995 Dodge Pickup, and 1995 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, refer to CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
. For appropriate wiring diagram, refer to WIRING DIAGRAMS
. After each repair, perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A
.
- Using scan tool, erase fault messages and actuate overdrive solenoid. Wait 10 seconds. Using scan tool, read fault messages. If OVERDRIVE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT DTC returns, go to step 4). If OVERDRIVE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT DTC does not return, go to next step.
- Wiggle wiring harness between transmission connector and PCM with actuator test still running. Using scan tool, read fault messages. If OVERDRIVE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT DTC returns, go to step 4).
- If OVERDRIVE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT DTC does not return, condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. TRANS OVERDRIVE SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC is set if solenoid control circuit is not in its proper state when monitored by PCM (i.e. circuit voltage is low when solenoid should be off, or high when solenoid should be on). Possible causes are: open or shorted overdrive control circuit wire, open or shorted overdrive solenoid coil, or open 12-volt feed to overdrive solenoid. See INACTIVE DTC CONDITION . Test is complete.
- Disconnect overdrive solenoid connector on transmission. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on overdrive solenoid connector, ignition feed circuit (Light Green/Black wire). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open Light Green/Black wire.
- If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance at terminal No. 55 on PCM connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in solenoid control circuit. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, go to next step.
- Using external ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminal No. 1 on transmission solenoid connector and terminal No. 55 on PCM connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open overdrive solenoid control circuit. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage at terminal No. 55 on PCM connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace overdrive solenoid in transmission.
