Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1995 Dodge Ram Wagon, 1995 Dodge Ram Van, 1995 Dodge Pickup, and 1995 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, refer to CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
. For appropriate wiring diagram, refer to WIRING DIAGRAMS
. After each repair, perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A
.
- Using scan tool, erase fault messages and actuate Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid. Wait 10 seconds. Using scan tool, read fault messages. If TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC returns, go to step 5). If TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC does not return, condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. Go to next step.
- TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC sets if solenoid or relay control circuit is not in its proper state when monitored by Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Possible causes are: open or shorted solenoid or relay control circuit, open or shorted solenoid or relay coil, or open 12-volt feed circuit to solenoid or relay. Go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read fault messages. TCC actuation test should still be running. Wiggle wiring harness from TCC solenoid relay to PCM. If TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC returns, repair wiring harness as necessary. If TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC does not return, test is complete.
- Disconnect TCC solenoid connector. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on TCC solenoid connector ignition feed circuit. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open ignition feed circuit.
- If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance at terminal No. 54 on PCM connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair TCC solenoid control circuit for short to ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Using external ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 54 on PCM connector and Orange/Black wire on TCC connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open TCC solenoid control circuit. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Reconnect TCC solenoid. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage at terminal No. 54 on PCM connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace TCC solenoid.
