Test 20A - Red Brake Warning Light Problem

NOTE: Perform TEST 1A - CHECKING SYSTEM FOR DTCS  before proceeding.
  1. If Red BRAKE warning light is always on, go to next step. If Red BRAKE warning light is not always on, go to step 7).
  2. Completely release parking brake. Inspect master cylinder brake fluid level. If parking brake was on or brake fluid level was low, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If parking brake was not on and brake fluid level was okay, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect park brake switch. Observe Red BRAKE warning light. If Red BRAKE warning light is on, go to next step. If Red BRAKE warning light is not on, replace park brake switch. Perform TEST VER-1A.
  4. Disconnect brake warning switch connector. Observe Red BRAKE warning light. If Red BRAKE warning light is on, go to next step. If Red BRAKE warning light is not on, check for short to ground in Gray/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If no short is found, replace brake warning switch. Perform TEST VER-1A.
  5. Reconnect brake warning switch. Disconnect ignition switch 7-pin connector. Ignition switch connector is located approximately half way down steering column on left side. Inspect ignition switch connector for any damaged or pushed out terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If terminals are okay, go to next step.
  6. Connect a jumper wire between 7-pin connector terminals No. 2 (Dark Blue/Gray wire) and No. 4 (Red/White wire). If Red BRAKE warning light is on, repair Dark Blue/Gray wire for short to ground. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If Red BRAKE warning light is not on, replace ignition switch. Perform TEST VER-1A.
  7. If ABS warning light operates, go to next step. If ABS warning light does not operate, repair open Dark Blue/White. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  .
  8. Turn ignition off. Backprobe a jumper wire between Body Control Module (BCM) connector terminal No. 2 (Gray/Black wire) and ground. If Red BRAKE warning light comes on, go to next step. If Red BRAKE warning light does not come on, see appropriate BRAKES article to diagnose BCM.
  9. Turn ignition switch to START position. Observe Red BRAKE warning light. If light does not come on with switch in START position, go to next step. If light comes on with switch in START position, go to step 12).
  10. Completely release parking brake. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, backprobe park brake switch connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open Gray/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  .
  11. Apply park brake. Backprobe park brake switch connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace park brake switch. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace brake warning switch. Perform TEST VER-1A.
  12. Disconnect ignition switch 7-pin connector. Ignition switch connector is located approximately half way down steering column on left side. Inspect ignition switch connector for any damaged or pushed out terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If terminals are okay, go to next step.
  13. Backprobe a jumper wire to 7-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Gray/Black wire). Reconnect 7-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on jumper wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace ignition switch. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
  14. Disconnect brake warning switch connector. Inspect connector for any damaged or pushed out terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If terminals are okay, go to next step.
  15. Check voltage on brake warning switch connector terminal No. 2 (Gray/Black wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace park brake switch. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  .
  16. Connect a jumper wire across brake warning switch connector. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, backprobe park brake switch connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace brake warning switch. Perform TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION TEST  . If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open Gray/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1A.
