Overdrive Unit: Reassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 1996 Dodge Ram Wagon, 1996 Dodge Ram Van, 1996 Dodge Pickup, 1996 Dodge Dakota, and 1996 Dodge Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install front bearing on output shaft (if not previously installed). Ensure groove in front bearing for front bearing retaining ring faces toward splined end of output shaft. Install snap ring on output shaft.
  2. Install key in output shaft for governor. Install NEW seal rings on governor drive. Ensure ends of seal rings are locked together.
  3. Install governor body on governor drive. Ensure filter is properly seated in governor body. Tighten governor body-to-governor drive bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Install inner weight, spring and outer weight in governor body. Install snap ring. Install governor drive and governor body assembly on output shaft. Ensure governor drive engages key in output shaft.
  5. Align valve shaft holes in governor body and output shaft. Install governor valve, valve shaft and clips. Ensure clips are installed on each end of valve shaft and are fully seated. Install governor snap ring. Install rear bearing and snap ring in overdrive unit case.
  6. Install parking sprag, spring and shaft in overdrive unit case. Ensure end of spring is hooked on parking sprag.
  7. Install and tighten shaft retainer plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install reaction plug in overdrive unit case. Ensure locating pin on reaction plug engages hole in overdrive unit case. See Figure . Install snap ring to retain reaction plug. DO NOT  over compress snap ring when installing.
  8. Install alignment clip on end of governor supply tube until clip contacts shoulder on each tube (if removed). See Figure . Install governor support and governor supply tube assembly in overdrive unit case. Install governor support snap ring.
  9. Install front bearing retaining ring in overdrive unit case. Ensure ends of front bearing retaining ring face the access cover opening in overdrive unit case.
  10. Place gear train in vertical position. Support assembly on Spring Compressor (6227-1) on workbench. Spring compressor fits in center of direct clutch hub.
  11. Install overdrive unit case over gear train assembly. Using snap ring pliers, expand front bearing retaining ring through access hole cover. See Figure .
  12. Slide overdrive unit case downward until front bearing retaining ring engages locating groove on outside of front bearing. Release front bearing retaining ring.
  13. Remove overdrive unit from spring compressor. Install gasket and access cover on overdrive unit case. Install reaction plate snap ring in overdrive unit case. This is the flat snap ring with the notched ends.
  14. Install waved snap ring in overdrive unit case. Waved snap ring fits on top of reaction plate snap ring. Both snap rings fit in same groove. Ensure both snap rings are fully seated.
  15. Install reaction plate for overdrive clutch pack. Reaction plate is thinner than the pressure plate. Install overdrive clutch discs and clutch plates on reaction plate. Start with clutch disc followed with clutch plate and then alternating between clutch plates and clutch discs.
    CAUTION: Ensure overdrive clutch components are installed in original location, and original number of components are installed. On 46/47RE and 46RH, there should be 4 clutch discs and 3 clutch plates. On 47RH, there should be 5 clutch discs and 4 clutch plates.
  16. Install pressure plate and snap ring. Place overdrive unit in vertical position with access to direct clutch hub. Remove alignment shaft.
  17. Proper thickness intermediate shaft selective spacer and overdrive piston thrust plate must be determined before installing overdrive unit. See DETERMINING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SELECTIVE SPACER & OVERDRIVE PISTON THRUST PLATE  under OVERDRIVE UNIT ADJUSTMENTS.
