CLOCKSPRING Centering

CAUTION: If rotating part of clockspring is not positioned properly with steering column and front wheels, clockspring failure may result. The following procedure must be used to center clockspring.
  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  .
  2. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove air bag module. Remove steering wheel. See AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Depress 2 plastic auto-locking tabs. See Figure . Rotate clockspring rotor in clockwise direction to end of its travel.
  3. From end of its travel, rotate rotor 2 1/2 turns in counterclockwise direction. Horn wire should end up at top and air bag module wire at bottom. See Figure .
  4. Install steering wheel and vibration damper (if equipped). Install air bag module. Tighten air bag module nuts to 80-100 INCH Lbs. (9-11 N.m). DO NOT connect negative battery cable at this time. Perform system operation check to ensure system is functioning properly. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  .
