Testing - System Operation Check

WARNING:
To avoid possible injury after repairs, turn ignition on from passenger-side of vehicle in case of accidental air bag deployment.
CAUTION:
When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES
in GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery.

- Disconnect negative battery cable and tape cable end (unless previously disconnected). Connect DRB to ASDM data link connector. On all models except Grand Cherokee, ASDM data link connector is located on ASDM. See Figure . On Grand Cherokee, ASDM data link connector is located on lower right side of center console. See Figure .
- To gain access to ASDM data link connector, remove small access cover on lower right side of center console.
- On all models, from passenger-side of vehicle, turn ignition on. Exit vehicle with DRB. After ensuring no one is inside vehicle, reconnect negative battery cable.
- Using DRB, read and record active fault codes. Read and record any stored fault codes. Erase stored fault codes if there are no active fault codes. If problem remains, fault codes will not erase. From passenger-side of vehicle, turn ignition off.
- Turn ignition on again and observe AIR BAG warning light. AIR BAG warning light should come on for 6-8 seconds and then go out, indicating system is functioning properly. If AIR BAG warning light either fails to illuminate or comes on and stays on, a system malfunction exists. Perform self-diagnostics. See DIAGNOSIS .
