Test NTC-3A - Checking Fuel Pressure

WARNING: High fuel pressure may be present in fuel lines. Open fuel system with caution. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  procedure in this article.
NOTE: Perform TEST NTC-1A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  at beginning of article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  at the end of this article. Perform TEST VER-2A  after each repair.
  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  . Connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel rail test port. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate fuel system. If fuel pressure is 34-44 psi (2.3-3.1 kg/cm2 ), fuel pressure is normal. Test is complete. If fuel pressure is not 34-44 psi (2.3-3.1 kg/cm2 ), record fuel pressure reading. If fuel pressure is more than 44 psi (3.1 kg/cm2 ), go to TEST NTC-3B  .
  2. If fuel pressure is less than 44 psi (3.1 kg/cm2 ), using scan tool, stop fuel system actuation. Turn ignition off. Inspect fuel lines for kinked or restricted lines. Repair fuel lines as necessary. If no kinked or restricted lines exist, go to next step.
  3. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  . Remove fuel pressure gauge. Install fuel pressure gauge between fuel tank and fuel filter. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate fuel system and go to next step.
  4. If fuel pressure is at least 5 psi (.4 kg/cm2 ) more than previous reading, relieve fuel pressure and replace fuel filter. If fuel pressure is not at least 5 psi (.4 kg/cm2 ) more than previous reading, using scan tool, stop fuel system actuation. On XJ or YJ bodies, go to next step. On ZJ body, replace fuel pump and sock assembly located inside fuel tank.
  5. On XJ or YJ bodies, remove fuel pressure gauge and reconnect disconnected components. Install fuel pressure gauge to fuel rail test port. Start engine and allow to idle. While monitoring fuel pressure gauge, disconnect and plug fuel regulator vacuum hose located at fuel rail. If fuel pressure increases more than 34 psi (2.4 kg/cm2 ), replace fuel pressure regulator. If fuel pressure does not increase more than 34 psi (2.4 kg/cm2 ), replace fuel pump and sock assembly located inside fuel tank.
