Passenger Compartment Heating
The HVAC control module uses the passenger compartment temperature requests from the Integrated Control Panel (ICP) and the Rear Integrated Control Panel (RICP) (if equipped) to calculate the heat requirements. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) communicates the Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) and the available recoverable heat from the electric drive temperature control system to the HVAC. The PCM and the HVAC communicate through the High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) power mode zero systems bus. The HVAC then calculates the most efficient sources of energy to provide the required heat to the passengers compartment from the following heat sources:
- High Voltage (HV) interior heater.
- For additional information, refer to: HEATING AND VENTILATION .
- Electric drive temperature control system.
- For additional information, Refer to: ELECTRIC DRIVE TEMPERATURE CONTROL .
- The outside air from the recovery heat exchanger in the Air Conditioning (A/C) system.
- For additional information, refer to: AIR CONDITIONING .
The HVAC communicates with the PCM to determine the recoverable heat from the electric drive temperature control system and the outside air. The HVAC then calculates which heat source to use to maximize the distance travelled by the vehicle on the Electric Vehicle (EV) battery. The HVAC then selects the heat proportion from each heat source and then activates the A/C system and the climate control components required. The heat is used to heat the climate control coolant that is circulated through the climate control system by the climate control coolant pump. The climate control coolant pump speed is controlled by the HVAC with a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal.
