Cylinder Head (G2498210): Installation

The following step(s) applies to: 

All vehicles 

1. Inspect the cylinder head face for distortion.

   Refer to: CYLINDER HEAD DISTORTION

2. CAUTION: Make sure that the dowels and dowel holes are clean and free from debris and foreign material.

   Install the 2 cylinder head locating dowels.

3. NOTE: The cylinder head gasket must be installed onto the cylinder block so that it aligns with the dowels.

   Install a new cylinder head gasket.

   Renew Part: Cylinder head gasket Quantity: 1 . 

4. WARNING: This step requires the aid of another technician.
   CAUTION:

   • Make sure that the component is correctly located on the locating dowels.
   • Bolts must be tightened in the sequence illustrated.
   • Bolts must be released in the sequence illustrated.

   • With the aid of another technician install the cylinder head.
   • Use the special tool to install and tighten the 10 new cylinder head bolts.

     Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1653 

     Renew Part: Cylinder head bolts Quantity: 10 . 

     Torque 

     1. Stage 1: 30 Nm 
     2. Stage 2: 62 Nm 
     3. Stage 3: Loosen 180° 
     4. Stage 4: 62 Nm 
     5. Stage 5: 115°

   Install and tighten the remaining bolt to the cylinder head.

   Torque  : 25 Nm

   Install and tighten the 3 bolts.

   Torque  : 12 Nm

   • Install a new secondary timing chain tensioner arm.

     Renew Part: Timing chain tensioner arm Quantity: 1 . 

   • Install and tighten the new bolt.

     Torque  : 25 Nm

   • Install the engine lifting bracket.
   • Install and tighten the 2 bolts.

     Torque  : 25 Nm 

9. CAUTION: Make sure that the components are clean, dry and free from corrosion and foreign material.
   NOTE: Make sure the components are installed to their original positions.

   • Lubricate the 8 hydraulic valve tappets with clean engine oil.

     Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS 

   • Install the 8 hydraulic valve tappet and roller finger camshaft follower assemblies to their original position.

    Install the side NVH  pad.

    Install the front NVH  pad.

    • Install the coolant pipe to the cylinder head assembly.
    • Install and tighten the bolt.

      Torque  : 8 Nm

    • Install 5 new O-ring seals to the oil filter housing assembly.

      Renew Part: Oil filter housing inlet/outlet O-ring seals Quantity: 4 . 

      Renew Part: Oil filter housing drain port O-ring seal Quantity: 1 . 

    • Install the oil filter housing.
    • Install and tighten the 3 bolts.

      Torque  : 12 Nm

    • Install the coolant pipe assembly.
    • Secure the coolant hose clamp.
    • Install and tighten the 2 bolts.

      Torque  : 12 Nm

    • Install the oil temperature sensor.

      Torque  : 11 Nm 

    • Secure the clip.

    • Install the wiring harness into the correct position.
    • Connect the 5 electrical connectors.
    • Install and tighten the bolt.

      Torque  : 6 Nm

    Install the oil temperature sensor connector clip.

18. Install the valve cover.

    Refer to: VALVE COVER (G2498214) 

19. Install the turbocharger.

    Refer to: TURBOCHARGER (G2270371)

20. Install the intake manifold.

    Refer to: INTAKE MANIFOLD - VEHICLES WITH: PHEV (G2756535) 

21. Install the oil filter element.

    Refer to: OIL FILTER ELEMENT (G2498216) 

22. Connect the 12V system.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    Plug in hybrid electric vehicles only

    Power Up the HV  system. Only technicians qualified to EVAP  level are allowed to perform this procedure. It is mandated that all technicians involved with the steps in this procedure have read and understood the EV  Safety Rules.
