Steering Wheel (G1817753): Removal

WARNING:
  • Allow a period of 10 minutes to elapse after disconnecting the battery before undertaking any work on the SRS.
  • To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any air bag supplementary restraints system (SRS) components. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for one minute. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  • Take extra care when handling SRS components.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  2. Make the SRS system safe.

    Refer to: STANDARD WORKSHOP PRACTICES

  3. Remove the driver air bag module.

    Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE

    • Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.
    • Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt.
  5. CAUTION: Make sure that the wheels and tires are in the straight-ahead position. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the components.
    NOTE: Note the steering wheel to column alignment mark.

    Carefully remove the steering wheel from the steering column.

  6. CAUTION: Make sure that the clockspring rotor does not rotate.
    NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

    Secure the clockspring with adhesive tape.

    Remove the lower trim.

    Remove the steering wheel switchpack and disconnect the electrical connector.

  9. NOTE:
    • If equipped.
    • Repeat this step for both paddle shifters.

    Remove the screw and remove the paddle shifter.

  10. NOTE:
    • If equipped.
    • Repeat this step for both paddle shifters.

    Disconnect the paddle shifter electrical connector.

    Remove the 3 bolts and remove the airbag retaining bracket.

    Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the steering wheel wiring harness.
