Pinpoint Test I: Heated Steering Wheel Circuit Tests

  1. I1: CHECK THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL HIGH CURRENT CIRCUIT 
    NOTE: The heated steering wheel will not operate if the engine is not running.
    1. Remove the steering column lower cowl.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Set the heated steering wheel switch to ON.
    4. Set the multimeter to measure voltage.
    5. Measure and record the battery voltage (reference voltage).
    6. Measure the voltage between the heated steering wheel electrical connector (column side - high current power), harness side and the steering wheel electrical connector (column side - high current ground).

    Is the voltage less than or equal to 12 volts? 

    Yes 

    GO to  I2

    No 

    GO to  I10

  2. I2: CHECK THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    NOTE: The engine should still be running and the heated steering wheel switch set to ON.
    1. Measure the voltage between the heated steering wheel connector (column side - ground) harness side and the chassis ground.

    Is the voltage greater than 0 volts? 

    Yes 

    Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the heated steering wheel circuit (clockspring to ground) for open circuit, high resistance. REPAIR the circuit as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  I3

  3. I3: CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE STEERING WHEEL MODULE FUSE 
    NOTE: The engine should still be running and the heated steering wheel switch set to ON.
    1. Measure the voltage across the passenger junction box, steering wheel module fuse.

    Is the voltage greater than 0 volts? 

    Yes 

    GO to  I5

    No 

    GO to  I4

  4. I4: CHECK THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    NOTE: The engine should still be running and the heated steering wheel switch set to ON.
    1. Measure the voltage between the battery positive terminal and the heated steering wheel electrical connector (column side - high current power), harness side.

    Is the voltage greater than 0 volts? 

    Yes 

    Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the heated steering wheel circuit (battery positive terminal to fuse) for open circuit, high resistance. REPAIR the circuit as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the heated steering wheel circuit (fuse to clockspring) for open circuit, high resistance. REPAIR the circuit as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

  5. I5: CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE STEERING WHEEL MODULE FUSE WITH THE HEATED STEERING SWITCH SET TO THE OFF POSITION 
    NOTE: The engine should still be running and the heated steering wheel switch set to ON.
    1. Measure the voltage across the passenger junction box, steering wheel module fuse.
    2. Set the heated steering wheel switch to OFF.

    Is the voltage greater than 0 volts? 

    Yes 

    GO to  I6

    No 

    GO to  I9

  6. I6: CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE STEERING WHEEL MODULE FUSE WITH THE CLOCKSPRING ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR DISCONNECTED 
    NOTE: The engine should still be running and the heated steering wheel set to on.
    1. Measure the voltage across the passenger junction box, steering wheel module fuse.
    2. Disconnect Clockspring electrical connector (steering column side).

    Is the voltage greater than 0 volts? 

    Yes 

    Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the heated steering wheel circuit (fuse to clockspring) for short circuit to ground. REPAIR the circuit as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  I7

  7. I7: STEERING WHEEL MODULE WIRING HARNESS INTEGRITY CHECK 
    1. Remove the driver airbag module. Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE
    2. Check the integrity of the wiring harness (clockspring to the heated steering wheel control module).

    Is a wiring harness fault present? 

    Yes 

    REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  I8

  8. I8: CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE STEERING WHEEL MODULE FUSE WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING 
    1. Disconnect Clockspring electrical connector (steering wheel side).
    2. Connect Clockspring electrical connector (steering column side).
    3. Install the driver airbag module. Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE
    4. Start the engine.
    5. Measure the voltage across the passenger junction box, steering wheel module fuse.

    Is the voltage greater than 0 volts? 

    Yes 

    Install a new clockspring Refer to: CLOCKSPRING TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    Install a new heated steering wheel control module or steering wheel switch assembly (depending on model variant) as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

  9. I9: STEERING WHEEL MODULE WIRING HARNESS INTEGRITY CHECK 
    1. Remove the driver airbag module. Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE
    2. Check the integrity of the wiring harness (clockspring to the heated steering wheel control module).

    Is a wiring harness fault present? 

    Yes 

    REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    Install a new steering wheel Refer to: STEERING WHEEL  TEST the system for normal operation.

  10. I10: STEERING WHEEL MODULE WIRING HARNESS INTEGRITY CHECK 
    1. Remove the driver airbag module. Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE
    2. Check the integrity of the wiring harness (clockspring to the heated steering wheel control module).

    Is a wiring harness fault present? 

    Yes 

    REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  I11

  11. I11: HEATED STEERING WHEEL HIGH CURRENT CHECK 
    1. Disconnect Steering wheel high current inline heated steering wheel electrical connector.
    2. Measure the resistance between the steering wheel high current inline heated steering wheel electrical connector (heater element side - high current power) and high current ground.

    Is the resistance 0 ohms or greater than 5 ohms? 

    Yes 

    Install a new steering wheel Refer to: STEERING WHEEL  TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  I12

  12. I12: CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING HEATED STEERING WHEEL VBATT CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
    1. Disconnect Clockspring electrical connector (steering wheel side).
    2. Disconnect Clockspring electrical connector (steering column side).
    3. Rotate the steering wheel during this test to check for an intermittent fault.
    4. Measure the resistance between the clockspring heated steering wheel connector (column side - VBatt), harness side and the clockspring heated steering wheel connector (steering wheel side - VBatt), harness side.

    Is the resistance less than 1 ohms? 

    Yes 

    Install a new clockspring Refer to: CLOCKSPRING TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  I13

  13. I13: CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING HEATED STEERING WHEEL GROUND CIRCUIT 
    1. Rotate the steering wheel during this test to check for an intermittent fault.
    2. Measure the resistance between the clockspring heated steering wheel electrical connector (column side - ground), harness side and the clockspring heated steering wheel electrical connector (steering wheel side - ground), harness side.

    Is the resistance less than 1 ohms? 

    Yes 

    Install a new clockspring Refer to: CLOCKSPRING TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    Install a new heated steering wheel control module or steering wheel switch assembly (depending on model variant) as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
