Pinpoint Test H: Steering Wheel Module Wiring Harness Checks

  1. H1: STEERING WHEEL MODULE WIRING HARNESS INTEGRITY CHECK 
    1. Remove the driver airbag module. Refer to: DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE
    2. Check the integrity of the wiring harness (clockspring to the heated steering wheel control module).

    Is a wiring harness fault present? 

    Yes 

    REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  H2

  2. H2: STEERING WHEEL MODULE VBATT CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
    1. Disconnect Clockspring electrical connector (steering wheel side).
    2. Disconnect Clockspring electrical connector (steering column side).
    3. Rotate the steering wheel during this test to check for an intermittent fault.
    4. Measure the resistance between the clockspring electrical connector (steering wheel side - VBatt), harness side and the clockspring electrical connector (steering column side - VBatt) harness side.

    Is the resistance less than 1 ohm? 

    Yes 

    Install a new clockspring. Refer to: CLOCKSPRING TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  H3

  3. H3: STEERING WHEEL MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
    1. Rotate the steering wheel during this test to check for an intermittent fault.
    2. Measure the resistance between the clockspring electrical connector (steering wheel side - ground), harness side and the clockspring electrical connector (steering column side - ground) harness side.

    Is the resistance less than 1 ohm? 

    Yes 

    Install a new clockspring. Refer to: CLOCKSPRING TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    GO to  H4

  4. H4: STEERING WHEEL MODULE AND LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK OPEN CIRCUIT TEST 4 
    1. Rotate the steering wheel during this test to check for an intermittent fault.
    2. Measure the resistance between clockspring electrical connector (steering wheel side - LIN  1), harness side and clockspring connector (column side LIN  1), harness side.

    Is the resistance less than 1 ohm? 

    Yes 

    Install a new clockspring. Refer to: CLOCKSPRING TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    Install a new heated steering wheel control module or steering wheel switch assembly (depending on model variant) as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
