Driver Airbag Module (G1818496): Removal

WARNING:
  • Always wear safety glasses when repairing an airbag Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) vehicle and when handling an airbag.
  • Never probe the connectors on the airbag. Doing so may result in airbag deployment. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  • To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any airbag Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) components. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the startup battery ground cable and wait one minute. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  • Make sure that the airbag wiring harness is routed correctly, failure to follow this instruction could cause a faulty airbag.
NOTE: This procedure shows North American Specification (NAS) and non NAS variants.

The following step(s) applies to: 

All vehicles 

  1. Make sure the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) is safe.

    Refer to: SUPPLEMENTARY RESTRAINT SYSTEM HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  2. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

    Rotate the steering wheel.

  4. NOTE: Gentle pressure applied to the airbag towards the instrument panel aids release.

    Release the clip.

    Release the clip.

    Rotate the steering wheel.

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    Non NAS vehicles 

  7. CAUTION: Take extra care not to damage the wiring harnesses.
    NOTE: Make a note of the orientation of the wiring harness to aid installation.

    Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the driver airbag.

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    NAS vehicles 

  8. CAUTION: Take extra care not to damage the wiring harnesses.
    NOTE: Make a note of the orientation of the wiring harness to aid installation.

    Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the driver airbag.
