Driver Airbag - Project 8 (G2248426): Removal

WARNING:
  • To prevent accidental deployment, you must de-energize the power in the Restraints Control Module (RCM). Wait at least 2 minutes after you disconnect the startup battery ground cable before you do any work on, of adjacent to, the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS). If you do not follow these instructions, it can cause injury or death.
  • Always wear safety glasses when working on an airbag equipped vehicle and when handling an airbag. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  • Do not connect any electrical test device or equipment to the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) connectors.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.

The following step(s) applies to: 

All vehicles 

  1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  2. To avoid accidental deployment, wait at least 2 minutes after you disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees for access to slots.

  4. CAUTION: Gentle pressure applied to the airbag towards the instrument panel aids release.

    Release the clip.

    Release the clip.

    Turn the steering wheel back to the straight ahead position.

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    NAS vehicles 

  7. CAUTION: Take extra care not to damage the wiring harnesses.
    NOTE: Make a note of the orientation of the wiring harness to aid installation.

    • Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.
    • Release the 2 wiring harness clips.
    • Remove the driver airbag.

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    Non NAS vehicles 

  8. CAUTION: Take extra care not to damage the wiring harnesses.
    NOTE: Make a note of the orientation of the wiring harness to aid installation.

    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Release the 2 wiring harness clips.
    • Remove the driver airbag.
