Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lexus ES 330. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. PERFORM PRE-CHECK 
    1. Check that all of the following conditions for not illuminating the brake warning light are satisfied.
      1. The ABS warning light is off.
      2. The amount of the brake fluid is between the min. line and max. line of the brake master cylinder reservoir.
      3. The parking brake pedal is fully released.
    NOTE: When releasing the parking brake, move the shift lever into the P position to hold the vehicle for safety.

    NEXT: Go to next step. 

  2. CHECK DTC FOR ABS 
    1. Check if the DTCs are recorded, (see PRE-CHECK  )

      NO: Go to step 3 

      YES: REPAIR CIRCUIT INDICATED BY OUTPUT CODE 

  3. INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT 

    WHEN USING HAND-HELD TESTER: 

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Select the item "BRAKE WARN LIGHT" in the ACTIVE TEST and operate the BRAKE warning light on the hand-held tester display.

    4. Check that "ON" and "OFF" of the BRAKE warning light are shown on the combination meter with the hand-held tester.

    Standard: 

    1. Turn the BRAKE warning light is turned ON or OFF in accordance with the hand-held tester. 

    WHEN NOT USING HAND-HELD TESTER: 

    1. Turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the connector S1 from the skid control ECU.

    2. Ground terminal BRL of the skid control ECU.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    4. Check that the brake warning light goes off.

    OK: Go to step   8 

    NG: Go to next step. 

  4. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Remove the parking brake switch.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in Fig 4 .

      Standard

    NG: REPAIR PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  5. CHECK HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - PARKING BRAKE SWITCH) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector S1 and the parking brake switch connector P5.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in Fig 6 .

      Standard

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in Fig 7 .

      Standard

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  6. INSPECT BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH 
    1. Remove the reservoir tank cap and strainer.
    2. Disconnect the brake fluid level warning switch connector B1.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in Fig 9 .

      Standard

    NG: REPLACE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH - COMBINATION METER) 
    1. Disconnect the combination meter connector C7 and the brake fluid level warning switch connector B1.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in Fig 11 .

      Standard

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in Fig 12 .

      Standard

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector S1 and combination meter connector C8.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in Fig 14 .

      Standard

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in Fig 15 .

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  9. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSY (SEE  COMBINATION METER  ) 

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSY 

    OK: REPLACE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSY (SEE  REPLACEMENT  ) 

    NOTE: When replacing the Brake Actuator assy, perform zero point calibration (see PRE-CHECK  ).
