Rear Clutch: Reassembly

  1. Lubricate rings with Dexron-II. Install "D" shaped rings on piston with round side facing out. See Figure . Push piston into rear clutch retainer by hand, being careful not to damage rings. Install return spring on piston.
    2. NOTE: Soak NEW lined plates in Dexron-II ATF for at least 2 hours before installation.
  2. Compress return spring with wave spring by pushing down with a screwdriver and setting wave spring in groove. Install pressure plate, lined plate(s) and steel plate(s), alternating lined and steel plates. Install reaction plate. See Figure .
  3. Install large snap ring and measure clearance between reaction plate and snap ring. Clearance should be .016-.024" (.40-.60 mm). If clearance is incorrect, replace snap ring. See FRONT & REAR CLUTCH END PLAY SNAP RINGS  table. Install thrust race, small snap ring and NEW seal ring.
