Front Clutch: Reassembly
- Lubricate "D" shaped rings with Dexron-II ATF. Install ring on piston with round side of ring facing out. Push piston into front clutch retainer by hand, being careful not to damage ring. Install return spring and spring retainer.
- Compress spring and spring retainer. Install small snap ring to hold return spring to clutch retainer. See Figure . Alternately install steel plates and lined plates starting with steel plate. If installing old plates, ensure they are installed in original positions and direction.
- Install large snap ring to clutch retainer, and measure clearance between snap ring and steel plate. Clearance should be .028-.035" (.70-.90 mm). If clearance is incorrect, replace snap ring. See FRONT & REAR CLUTCH END PLAY SNAP RINGS table.
NOTE:
Soak NEW lined plates in Dexron-II ATF for at least 2 hours before installation.
