Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2011 GMC Yukon XL, 2011 GMC Yukon, 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2011 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  2. Remove the wheel drive shaft, if equipped. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (2500) , Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (1500) .
  3. NOTE:

    If removing the knuckle assembly to service the lower ball joint, skip step 3.

  4. Remove the wheel bearing and hub assembly. Refer to Front Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement (1500) , Front Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement (2500) .
  5. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .

  7. Support the lower control arm.
  8. Separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle. Refer to Upper Control Arm Replacement (1500) , Upper Control Arm Replacement (2500) .
  9. Separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement , Lower Control Arm Replacement .

    NOTE:

    If removing the knuckle assembly to servicing the lower ball joint, DO NOT remove or disconnect any of the brake or electrical components. Secure the knuckle assembly to the side.

  11. Remove the knuckle from the vehicle.
