DTC P15A5: Motor Current Sensor Circuit Malfunction

NOTE:
  • Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data, and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION  ).
  • If the DTC cannot be cleared, do the troubleshooting for DTC U1204.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  2. Clear the DTC with the HDS (see DTC CLEAR  ).
  3. Start the engine, and let it idle 1 minute under these conditions:
    • Headlights on high beam
    • Blower fan at maximum speed
    • Rear window defogger on
  4. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P0A3F, P0A5E, P0A5F, P0A61, P0A62, P0A64, P0A65, P0BE6, P0BEA, P0BEE, P0BFD, P1437, and/or P1440 indicated? 

    YES  -Go to the INDICATED DTC'S TROUBLESHOOTING .

    NO  -Go to step  5.

  5. Test-drive the vehicle using wide open throttle for at least 2 seconds, then decelerate while lightly braking.
  6. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P15A5 indicated? 

    YES  -Go to step  6.

    NO  -Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the phase motor current sensor and the IMA motor power cable.

  7. At idle, individually check the amperage of the U PHASE MOTOR CURRENT SENSOR, the V PHASE MOTOR CURRENT SENSOR, and the W PHASE MOTOR CURRENT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS.

    Do the values vary from 0 A? 

    YES  -Replace the phase motor current sensor (see MOTOR POWER INVERTER (MPI) MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ), then go to step  28.

    NO  -Go to step  8.

  8. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  9. Turn the battery module switch OFF (see TURNING OFF AND ON POWER TO THE HIGH VOLTAGE CIRCUIT  ).
  10. Remove the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ).
  11. Remove the PCU lid, the PCU busplate, and the PCU cover (see IPU CASE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ).
  12. Disconnect MCM connector C (22P).
  13. Disconnect the MPI module 12P connector (A).

  14. Check for continuity between these terminals:
    • MCM connector terminal C8 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 11.
    • MCM connector terminal C16 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 5.
    • MCM connector terminal C17 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 10.
    • MCM connector terminal C1 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 4.
    • MCM connector terminal C9 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 9.
    • MCM connector terminal C2 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 3.

      Is there continuity between all of the terminals? 

      YES  -Go to step  15.

      NO  -Repair an open in the wire between the MPI module 12P connector and the MCM (C1, C2, C8, C9, C16, C17), then go to step  28.

  15. Check for continuity between these MCM connector C (22P) terminals and body ground individually:
    • C1 and body ground
    • C2 and body ground
    • C8 and body ground
    • C9 and body ground
    • C16 and body ground
    • C17 and body ground

      Is there continuity between each terminal and body ground? 

      YES  -Repair a short in the wire between the MPI module 12P connector and the MCM (C1, C2, C8, C9, C16, C17), then go to step  28.

      NO  -Go to step  16.

  16. Remove the IMA motor power cables (A) from the phase motor current sensor.

  17. Disconnect the IMA motor power cable connector from the motor stator (see TURNING OFF AND ON POWER TO THE HIGH VOLTAGE CIRCUIT  ).
    NOTE: If the IMA motor power cable terminals are wet, dry them with a clean shop towel. Do not use compressed air.
  18. Check for continuity between IMA motor power cable terminals A and B, B and C, and C and A individually.

    Is there continuity? 

    YES  -Replace the IMA motor power cable (see IMA MOTOR POWER CABLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ), then go to step  28.

    NO  -Go to step  19.

  19. Substitute a known-good MPI module (see SUBSTITUTING THE MCM  ).
  20. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  21. If removed, reconnect the IMA motor power cables to the phase motor current sensor.
    NOTE: Make sure the cables are correctly positioned before you reconnect them.
  22. Reinstall the PCU cover, the PCU busplate, and the PCU lid (see IPU CASE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ).
  23. Reinstall the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ), then turn the battery module switch ON (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION  ).
  24. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  25. Clear the DTC with the HDS (see DTC CLEAR  ).
  26. Test-drive the vehicle using wide open throttle for at least 2 seconds, then decelerate while lightly braking.
  27. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P15A5 indicated? 

    YES  -Go to step  37.

    NO  -Replace the MPI module (see MOTOR POWER INVERTER (MPI) MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ), then go to step  28.

  28. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  29. Reconnect all connectors.
  30. If removed, reconnect the IMA motor power cables to the phase motor current sensor.
    NOTE: Make sure the cables are correctly positioned before you reconnect them.
  31. If removed, reinstall the PCU cover, the PCU busplate and the PCU lid (see IPU CASE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ).
  32. If removed, reinstall the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ), then turn the battery module switch ON (see TURNING OFF AND ON POWER TO THE HIGH VOLTAGE CIRCUIT  ).
  33. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  34. Clear the DTC with the HDS (see DTC CLEAR  ).
  35. Test-drive the vehicle using wide open throttle for at least 2 seconds, then decelerate while lightly braking.
  36. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P15A5 indicated? 

    YES  -Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the phase motor current sensor and the IMA motor power cable, then go to step  1.

    NO  -Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC'S TROUBLESHOOTING .

  37. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  38. Reconnect all connectors.
  39. If removed, reconnect the IMA motor power cables to the phase motor current sensor.
    NOTE: Make sure the cables are correctly positioned before you reconnect them.
  40. If removed, reinstall the PCU lid, the PCU busplate and the PCU cover (see IPU CASE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ).
  41. If removed, reinstall the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ), then turn the battery module switch ON (see TURNING OFF AND ON POWER TO THE HIGH VOLTAGE CIRCUIT  ).
  42. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  43. Update the MCM if it does not have the latest software (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) UPDATE  ), or substitute a known-good MCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE MCM  ).
  44. Test-drive the vehicle using wide open throttle for at least 2 seconds, then decelerate while lightly braking.
  45. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P15A5 indicated? 

    YES  -If the MCM was updated, substitute a known-good MCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE MCM  ), then recheck. If the MCM was substituted, go to step  24.

    NO  -If the MCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the MCM was substituted, replace the original MCM (see IPU CASE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  ). If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC'S TROUBLESHOOTING .
