Headliner Removal/Installation

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations (see COMPONENT LOCATION INDEX ) and the precautions and procedures (see PRECAUTIONS AND PROCEDURES ) before doing repairs or service.

1. Remove these items:
   • Front pillar trims, both sides (see TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - PILLAR AREAS  )
   • Center pillar trims, both sides (see CENTER PILLAR TRIM  )
   • Individual map light (see INDIVIDUAL MAP LIGHT TEST/REPLACEMENT )
   • Sunvisors and holders, both sides (see SUNVISOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION  )
2. Slide the both seats all the way forward, then recline the seat-back fully.
3. Remove the bolt from the end of the headliner on each side.
   NOTE: Left side is shown, right side is similar.

4. Lower the headliner (A).
   1. Remove the door opening seals (B) and the hatch weatherstrip (C) from each roof portion.
   2. Detach the clips from the body.
   3. With the help of an assistant, lower the headliner.

5. With the help of an assistant, pull out the headliner (A) through the passenger's door opening.
   NOTE: Do not bend the headliner. Bending the headliner will crease and damage it.
   1. M/T model: Position the shift lever in reverse.
   2. CVT model: Move the shift lever to D.
   3. Match the center pillar part of the headliner with the passenger's door opening.
   4. Turn the headliner inside and face the front edge of the headliner to the passenger's seat side.
   5. Pull out the headliner by avoiding the driver side front edge to be in contact with front side of the passenger's side door panel.
   6. Close the right and left width of the headliner a little and pull out the headliner from the passenger's door opening.

      Roof side bracket replacement 

6. If necessary, remove the bolt, then remove the roof side bracket (A) from each side by releasing the hook (B).

7. Install the headliner in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
   • If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the headliner, along with the other parts listed for side curtain airbag deployment (see COMPONENT REPLACEMENT/INSPECTION AFTER DEPLOYMENT ).
   • To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the headliner and all removed trim. Replace any pieces with the following damage:
     • Any creases or tears in the headliner (A)
     • Any damage around the sunvisor holes (B) in the headliner
     • Any cracks in the sunvisor bracket (C)
     • Any bends or cracks in the sunvisor shaft (D)
     • Any cracks in the sunvisor base (E)
     • Any cracks in the sunvisor bracket cover (F)
     • Any cracks or breaks in the vanity mirror base (G)
   • If the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
   • Push the clips into place securely.
   • Check that both sides of the headliner are securely attached to the trim.
   • Make sure the headliner overlaps the trim pieces correctly (see CHECKING AND ADJUSTING THE HEADLINER/PILLAR TRIM OVERLAP ).
   • When reinstalling the headliner through the passenger's door opening, be careful not to fold or bend it. Also, be careful not to scratch the body.
   • Make sure each connector is plugged in properly.
