Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Isuzu Rodeo and 2000 Isuzu Amigo. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, read and record FAILURE RECORDS data. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS data as noted on scan tool. If scan tool displays DTC P1404 RAN AND PASSED, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If scan tool does not display DTC P1404 RAN AND PASSED, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR valve electrical connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, check for voltage at ignition feed circuit at EGR harness connector. If 12 volts exists, go to step  6. If 12 volts does not exist, go to next step.
  4. Check ignition feed circuit between ENGINE IG (15-amp) fuse in instrument panel fuse block to EGR harness connector. Repair as necessary. Retest system. If circuit is okay, go to step  7.
  5. Check resistance of EGR solenoid. If reading is less then 5 ohms, go to next step. If reading is greater than 5 ohms, go to step  14.
  6. Check EGR LOW circuit between EGR sensor and PCM for an open or shorted condition. If such a condition should exist, repair as necessary and retest system. If no problem was found, go to step  15.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR valve electrical connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe EGR value. If reading is 0 VOLTS - 0 percent, go to step  9. If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  8. Check EGR feedback circuit between PCM and EGR valve sensor for an open or shorted condition. If such condition is found, repair as necessary and retest system. If such condition does not exist, go to step  15.
  9. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, check for voltage at 5-volt reference signal terminal of EGR harness connector. If reading is about 5 volts, go to step  11. If reading is not about 5 volts, go to next step.
  10. Check EGR 5-volt reference circuit between PCM and EGR valve sensor for an open or shorted condition. If such condition is found, repair as necessary and retest system. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition off. Connect DVOM leads between 5-volt reference and signal return terminals of EGR valve harness connector. Turn ignition on. If reading is about 5 volts, go to step  13. If reading is not about 5 volts, go to next step.
  12. Check signal return circuit between PCM and EGR valve sensor for an open or short circuit to ground. Repair as necessary and retest system. If no problem is found, go to step  15.
  13. Turn ignition off. Connect a fused jumper wire between 5-volt reference circuit and EGR position feedback signal circuit terminals of EGR harness connector. Observe EGR value on scan tool. If reading indicates 5 VOLTS - 100 percent, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step  15.
  14. Replace EGR valve. Retest system.
  15. Replace and reprogram PCM using required equipment. See PROGRAMMING . Retest system.
