Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Review and record scan tool FAILURE RECORDS data, then clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS conditions that were recorded. Monitor specified DTC information for DTC P0481. If scan tool indicates DTC P0481 RAN AND PASSED, check for poor connections, open circuit or shorted condition. If DTC P0481 is set, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove high fan relay from underhood electrical center. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check for voltage at power feed terminal of high speed relay connector from ELEC. FAN (30-amp) fuse. If reading is about 12 volts, go to step  6. If reading is not about 12 volts, go to next step.
  4. Using DVOM, check for voltage at power feed terminal of high speed relay connector from ENGINE FAN (15-amp) fuse. If reading is about 12 volts, go to step  6. If reading is not about 12 volts, go to next step.
  5. Check high fan relay circuit and appropriate fuses for an open or shorted condition. Repair as necessary. Retest system.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using a DVOM, check high fan circuits for an open or shorted condition. Repair as necessary. If circuits are okay, go to next step.
  7. Install high fan relay. Using a fused jumper wire, ground high fan relay control circuit at appropriate PCM connector terminal. Turn ignition on. If fan runs at high speed, go to next step. If fan does not run at high speed, replace high fan relay.
  8. Replace and reprogram PCM using required equipment. See PROGRAMMING . Retest system.
