Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
- Install Tech 2 scan tool. Check for other DTCs. If DTC(s) P0452, P0453, P0461, P0462 or P0463 is also set, go to those DTC(s) in numerical order before proceeding. See DTC P0452: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR LOW VOLTAGE , DTC P0453: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR HIGH VOLTAGE , DTC P0461: FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT , DTC P0462: FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT LOW VOLTAGE or DTC P0463: FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH VOLTAGE . If other DTC(s) do not exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, command EVAP canister purge valve. Command EVAP vent solenoid on and off. If purge valve and vent solenoids click, go to next step. If purge valve and/or vent solenoid does not click, see PCM OUTPUTS DIAGNOSIS in DTC P0440.
- Turn ignition off. Remove fuel filler cap. Turn ignition on. Observe fuel pressure value on scan tool. If fuel tank pressure is zero mm Hg, go to next step. If fuel tank pressure is not as specified, go to DTC P0452: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR LOW VOLTAGE or DTC P0453: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR HIGH VOLTAGE .
- Reinstall fuel cap. Using scan tool, command EVAP vent solenoid on (closed). Zero EVAP pressure and vacuum gauges on EVAP Pressure/Purge Cart (J-41413). Connect EVAP pressure/purge cart to EVAP service port. Attempt to pressurize EVAP system to 12 mm Hg. Monitor pressure value on scan tool. If pressure value is about 12 mm Hg, go to next step. If pressure value is not about 12 mm Hg, go to DTC P0452: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR LOW VOLTAGE or DTC P0453: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR HIGH VOLTAGE .
- Using scan tool, pressurize EVAP system to 5 in. H2 O. Command EVAP vent solenoid off (open). Monitor pressure using gauge on EVAP pressure/purge cart. If pressure decreases to zero in. H2 O within 5 seconds, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If pressure does not decrease as described, go to next step.
- Ensure EVAP pressure/purge cart is still connected to EVAP service port. Disconnect large vent hose (marked air) from EVAP canister. Set rotary switch to PURGE. Start engine allowing it to idle until normal operating temperature is obtained. Accelerate engine to 2500 RPM while observing vacuum gauge on cart. If vacuum remains less than 10 in. H2 O, go to next step. Of vacuum does not remain less than 10 in. H2 O, go to step 10.
- Inspect vent hose between EVAP canister and vent solenoid for kinks, pinched or in some other manner blocked. Repair or replace as necessary and go to step 11. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Replace defective EVAP vent solenoid. After repair is completed, go to step 13.
- Replace EVAP canister. After repair is completed, go to next step.
- Reconnect all EVAP components previously disconnected. Using scan tool, command EVAP vent solenoid on (closed). Zero EVAP pressure and vacuum gauges on EVAP Pressure/Purge Cart (J-41413). Connect EVAP pressure/purge cart to EVAP service port. Pressurize system to 5 in. H2 O. Set rotary switch on cart to HOLD. Command EVAP vent solenoid off (open). Monitor pressure using gauge on EVAP pressure/purge cart. If pressure decreases to zero in. H2 O within 5 seconds, go to step 3. If pressure does not decrease as described, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter DTC P0446. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates TEST RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool did not indicate TEST RAN AND PASSED, repeat step 2.
- Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTC(s) are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
