PCM Outputs Diagnosis

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II (OBD-II) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Install Tech 2 scan tool. If number "1" is displayed under any of the numbered positions in OUTPUT DRIVERS, go to next step. If number "1" is not displayed as described, go to step  4.
  3. Check for open or short in corresponding circuit that contained number "1". Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10. If circuit is okay, go to step  8.
  4. Using scan tool, command the output circuit being checked while observing the corresponding position for each circuit. If number positions change to "1", go to next step. If any displayed positions change to "1", go to step  7.
  5. Using scan tool, command the output circuit being checked. If component or function being checked operates, go to step  10. If component or function being checked does not operate, go to next step.
  6. Make necessary repair to component or function being checked does not operate. After repair, go to step  10.
  7. Repair short to voltage in corresponding circuit for component or function that displayed "1". After repair, go to step  10.
  8. Disconnect harness connector to component connected to malfunctioning circuit. If number "1" is still displayed in corresponding output driver, go to next step. If number "1" is not displayed, go to step  6.
  9. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using appropriate equipment. See PROGRAMMING .
  10. Operate vehicle within conditions under which original symptoms were noted. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2. If system operates properly, no problem exists at this time.
