Fuel Gauge Test

CAUTION: In the following tests, DO NOT apply battery voltage to wire terminals, or fuel gauge will be damaged. Turn ignition off before fuel gauge pointer reaches "F" mark, or fuel gauge will be damaged.
  1. Turn ignition off. Check for open in fuse No. 25 (7.5-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. If problem exists, replace fuse and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Fold left rear seat forward and remove base frame cover. Remove fuel tank access panel. Disconnect fuel pump 5-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between fuel pump connector terminals No. 2 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Yellow/Black wire). Voltage should be 5-8 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check for open in Black/Yellow wire, Black wire, or poor ground connection (G552). Repair as necessary.
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect a jumper wire between fuel pump connector terminals No. 2 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Yellow/Black wire). Turn ignition on. Observe fuel gauge pointer. If pointer starts moving toward "F" mark, turn ignition off. Gauge is okay. Perform FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT TEST  . If pointer does not move, go to next step.
  4. Check for open or short in Yellow/Black wire between fuel tank unit and gauge assembly. If problem exists, repair Yellow/Black wire. If problem does not exist, replace fuel gauge.
