Fitting Pistons

  1. To determine if piston-to-cylinder clearance is within specification, measure piston skirt diameter at 90-degree angle to piston pin.
  2. Piston diameter is measured .63" (16 mm) from bottom of piston skirt. Different sized standard pistons are used. Piston size can be identified by "1" or "2" stamped in piston identification mark area on top of piston. See Fig 1.
  3. Ensure piston diameter is within specification. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  4. Cylinder bore diameter is measured 2" (50 mm) from top of cylinder bore, and on 8-valve, 4.13" (105 mm) or on 16-valve, 3.74" (95 mm) from top of cylinder bore. Original cylinder bore size can be identified by "1" or "2" stamped on deck surface in accordance with cylinder location. See Fig 1.
  5. Ensure cylinder bore diameter is within specification. See CYLINDER BLOCK  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Determine piston clearance. Replace piston or bore cylinder block for oversize piston if clearance is not within specification. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Two different oversize pistons are available.
