Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the right rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Non V-Series)Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (V-Series)
  2. Remove Exhaust Muffler. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LCV)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LF4)
  3. Remove Rear Suspension Lower Control Arm Cover. Refer to Rear Suspension Lower Control Arm Cover Replacement
  4. Separate Upper Control Arm @ Knuckle. Refer to Upper Control Arm Replacement
  5. Separate Upper Trailing Arm @ Knuckle. Refer to Trailing Arm Replacement (Upper)

  7. Two designs of axle nut can be encountered.
    1. First Design (Staking Style) (1)
    2. Second Design (Prevailing Torque Style) (2)
  8. For first design (1):

    CAUTION:

    Make sure that the wheel drive shaft nut is fully un-staked to avoid damage to the wheel drive shaft threads during the removal of the wheel drive shaft nut. Failure to follow these instructions could result in wheel, nut, and/or stud damage.

  10. Using a suitable punch and a hammer, unstake the drive shaft nut collar from the drive shaft slots (1).

    NOTE:

    Do NOT use air tools to remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Use hand tools ONLY.

  12. With the aid of an assistant holding the brake pedal down, use a breaker bar (1) and the proper size socket (2) to loosen the wheel drive shaft nut (3).

  14. Remove and DISCARD Wheel Drive Shaft Nut (1)
  15. For second design (2):

    NOTE:

    Do NOT use air tools to remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Use hand tools ONLY.

  17. With the aid of an assistant holding the brake pedal down, use a breaker bar (1) and the proper size socket (2) to loosen the wheel drive shaft nut (3).

    NOTE:

    Do NOT reuse wheel drive shaft nut. DISCARD and replace with NEW only.

  19. Remove and DISCARD Wheel Drive Shaft Nut (2)

  21. Using the J 45859  puller (1), separate the wheel drive shaft from the wheel bearing/hub assembly.

  23. Mark the relationship (1) of the wheel drive shaft (2) to the differential flange (3).

  25. Remove and DISCARD Wheel Drive Shaft Bolts (1) (Qty: 6)
  26. Remove and DISCARD Wheel Drive Shaft Washer (2) (Qty: 3)

    NOTE:

    Reposition the knuckle to allow the inner joint to pass the rear differential flange. It may be necessary to use a flat bladed tool to separate the wheel drive shaft from the differential flange.

  28. Remove Wheel Drive Shaft (1)

    NOTE:

    Do NOT reuse wheel drive shaft washer. Discard and replace with NEW only.

  30. Remove and DISCARD the washer (1) from the wheel drive shaft (2).
