Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Shift transmission into 3rd or 4th gear.
  2. Remove shift lever assembly. Refer to Shift Lever Assembly Replacement .
  3. If vehicle is a 2 wheel drive (2WD), remove propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - One Piece or Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece in Propeller Shaft.
  4. If vehicle is a 4 wheel drive (4WD), remove transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG 236/246-NP8 (Two Speed Automatic) or Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG 261-NP2 (Two Speed Manual).
  5. Using J 42371  , push back on white plastic sleeve on quick connect in order to separate hydraulic clutch line from clutch actuator quick connect.

  6. Disconnect following engine wiring harness electrical connectors:

    • Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (1)
    • Backup lamp switch (3)
    • Oxygen sensor (4)
  7. Remove engine harness clips from fuel feed/return line clips and transmission.
  8. If equipped with 4WD, remove clamp securing harness to fuel feed/return pipe bracket.
  9. If equipped with 4WD, remove vent hose clip from bracket.

  10. If equipped with 4WD, remove vent hose clip (1) from fuel feed/return hose bracket.

  11. If equipped with 4WD, remove fuel feed/return hose clip from bracket.

  12. Remove starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (4.3L Engine) , Starter Motor Replacement (4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L Engines) , Starter Motor Replacement (8.1L Engine) or Starter Motor Replacement (6.6L (LLY) Engine) in Engine Electrical.
  13. If equipped with 4.3L engine, remove transmission cover bolts.

  14. Support transmission using a suitable transmission jack.
  15. Remove transmission support crossmember. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  16. Remove bolts securing bottom right side of transmission to engine. Bolt (1) secures transmission cover on 4.3L engine only.

  17. Remove transmission cover.
  18. Remove stud securing right side of transmission to engine.

  19. Remove transfer case vent hose clip bracket nut and bracket.

    On 4.3L engine this bracket is located at 1 o'clock position and on 4.8L engine this bracket is located at 12 o'clock position.

  20. Remove bolt and studs securing transmission to engine.

  21. Pull transmission straight back off clutch hub splines. Do not let transmission hang from clutch assembly.
  22. Remove transmission from vehicle.
