Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 GMC Sierra and 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Drain the axle lubricant. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle)  or Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (9.5 LD Axle)  or Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (9.5 Inch HD and 10.5 Inch Axles) .
  3. Remove the rear axle assembly. Refer to Rear Axle Replacement (15/25 Series)  or Rear Axle Replacement (15 Series with Drum Brakes)  or Rear Axle Replacement (35 Series) .
  4. Remove the brake caliper brackets. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (JD9) or Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (JH6, JH7) .
  5. For the 8.6 inch and 9.5 inch axles, remove the brake rotors. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JD9) or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JH6, JH7)
  6. For the 10.5 inch and 11.5 inch axles, remove the hub and rotor assembly. Refer to Rear Axle Hub, Bearing, Cup, and/or Seal Replacement .
  7. Remove the rear axle cover housing and gasket. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement .
  8. Remove the axle shafts. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6, 9.5/9.5LD Inch Axles)  or Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle w/Drum Brakes) , 8.6 inch, 9.5 inch axles, or Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement , 10.5 inch, 11.5 inch axles.
  9. Remove the brake backing plates. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Backing Plate Replacement (JD9) or Rear Disc Brake Backing Plate Replacement (JH6, JH7) .
  10. For the 8.6 inch and 9.5 inch axles, remove the rear axle shaft oil seal and the bearing. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Seal and/or Bearing Replacement (w/Rear Disc)  or Rear Axle Shaft Seal and/or Bearing Replacement (w/Rear Drum) .
  11. Remove the differential assembly. Refer to Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement (8.6, 9.5/9.5LD, and 11.5 Inch Axles)  or Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) .
  12. Remove the drive pinion shaft yoke and the oil seal. Refer to Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (All Except 9.75 Inch Axle)  or Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle w/Drum Brakes) .
  13. Remove the drive pinion and the inner pinion bearing. Refer to Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement (8.6, 9.5/9.5LD, and 11.5 Inch Axles)  or Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) .
  14. Remove the pinion bearing cups. Refer to Drive Pinion Bearings Replacement (8.6, 9.5/9.5LD, and 11.5 Inch Axles) .
