Installation Procedure

NOTE:
IMPORTANT: If the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times, replace the pins.
  1. Install the 4 TORX® head screws (2) onto the steering column support assembly (1).

    Tighten 

    Tighten the screws to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).

  2. Lubricate the race and upper shaft assembly with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516), then install the lower shaft assembly using the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure.

  3. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  4. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

    IMPORTANT: If the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times they must be replaced.

  5. Lubricate the pivot pins (1) with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).
  6. Firmly seat each pivot pin (1) into the steering column tilt head assembly.
  7. Stake the pivot pins (1).
  8. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (2) onto the steering column jacket assembly (1).
  9. Install the steering column seal (3) onto the adapter and bearing assembly (2).
  10. Install the linear shift assembly. Refer to LINEAR SHIFT ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT  .

    CAUTION:

  11. Install the automatic transmission shift lock control.
  12. Install the signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to MULTIFUNCTION, TURN SIGNAL SWITCH REPLACEMENT  .
  13. Install the shift lever assembly only. Refer to SHIFT LEVER REPLACEMENT  .

    Put the shift lever in the NEUTRAL position.

  14. Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to TILT SPRING REPLACEMENT  .
  15. Install the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER CASE REPLACEMENT (TILT COLUMN)  or IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER CASE REPLACEMENT (STANDARD COLUMN)  .
  16. Enable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in SIR.
