Visual/Physical Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, 2002 Oldsmobile Alero, and 2002 Chevrolet Malibu. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Determine if the vehicle is equipped with an electrically assisted variable effort system. Perform electrical diagnosis before proceeding with mechanical diagnosis. See appropriate VARIABLE EFFORT STEERING article in STEERING. Review the system description and operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the power steering system. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom. Inspect the power steering reservoir for the proper power steering fluid level and condition. If problem is not found, diagnose by symptom.
