Rattle, Clunk Or Shudder Noise

- Did you review the Power Steering System General Description and perform the necessary inspections? If yes, go to next step. If no, see VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION .
- Verify that a rattle, clunk or shudder noise is present. Is a rattle, clunk or shudder noise present? If yes, go to next step. If no, system is okay.
- Inspect the power steering hoses for proper routing and clearance. Is the routing or clearance of the power steering hoses incorrect? If yes, go to step 11 . If no, go to next step.
- Inspect the engine drive belt for cracking or excessive wear. Is the drive belt cracked or excessively worn? If yes, go to step 12 .
- Inspect the power steering pump pulley for damage. Is the power steering pump pulley damaged? If yes, go to step 14 . If no, go to next step.
- Inspect the power steering pump and the power steering mounting bracket/brace for the proper installation. See POWER STEERING PUMP under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Is the power steering pump installation incorrect? If yes, go to step 14 . If no, go to next step.
- Inspect the power steering gear for the proper installation. See STEERING GEAR . Is the power steering gear installation incorrect? If yes, go to step 15 .
- Inspect the steering gear bearing preload for the proper adjustment. See RACK BEARING PRELOAD under ADJUSTMENTS. Is the steering gear bearing preload adjustment incorrect? If yes, go to step 16 . If no, go to next step.
- Inspect the suspension. Is the suspension worn? If yes, go to step 17 . If no, go to next step.
- Inspect the intermediate shaft. Is the intermediate shaft worn? If yes, go to step 19 . If no, go to step 3 .
- Adjust or replace the hoses. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 19 .
- Replace the engine drive belt. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 19 .
- Replace the power steering pump pulley. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 19 .
- Install the power steering pump correctly. See POWER STEERING PUMP under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 19 .
- Install the power steering gear correctly. See STEERING GEAR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 19 .
- Adjust the steering gear bearing preload. See RACK BEARING PRELOAD under ADJUSTMENTS. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 19 .
- Replace the worn suspension components. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 19 .
- Replace the intermediate shaft. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to next step.
- Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
