- Install the differential case, if removed. See DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY under OVERHAUL. Remove drive pinion assembly. Measure and record the thickness of the original pinion gear bearing retainer shim before any service procedures are performed to the pinion gear bearing retainer assembly. Install the original shim to the pinion bearing retainer. If the original shim is not available, install a 0.016" (0.41 mm) shim to build pinion depth. DO NOT apply sealant to the pinion gear bearing retainer at this time.
- Install the pinion gear bearing retainer. Install the pinion gear bearing retainer bolts. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Adjust the ring and pinion gear backlash. See RING & PINION GEAR BACKLASH Perform a gear tooth pattern check on the pinion and the ring gear. See DRIVE AXLE - GEAR TOOTH CONTACT PATTERNS article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If the gear tooth contact pattern indicates a high or a low flank contact pattern; adjust the pinion depth by increasing or decreasing thickness of pinion shim pack.
- Remove the pinion gear bearing retainer bolts. Remove the pinion gear bearing retainer. Remove the shim. If the gear tooth contact pattern shows a high flank contact pattern: Install a shim one size larger. If the gear tooth contact pattern shows a low flank contact pattern, install a shim one size smaller. Install the new shim to the pinion gear bearing retainer. Install pinion gear bearing retainer. Install pinion gear bearing retainer bolts. Tighten the pinion gear bearing retainer bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Recheck the gear tooth contact pattern of the pinion and the ring gear. Recheck ring and pinion gear backlash and adjust as necessary.
