Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE in Battery.
  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER REPLACEMENT in Interior Trim.
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to FAN REPLACEMENT in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the air conditioning compressor, if equipped. Refer to COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  5. Remove the nut holding the power steering pump rear bracket to the engine.

    Important:  The power steering pump can remain on the power steering pump mounting bracket. The pump hoses can remain attached to the pump.

  6. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket and set aside.
  7. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.

  8. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LOWER  .
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LEFT in Engine Exhaust.
  10. Remove the ground wires at the rear of the left cylinder head.
  11. Remove the A/C pipe bracket nut, if equipped.
  12. Remove the fuel pipe bracket bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.

  13. Remove the valve push rods. Refer to VALVE ROCKER ARM AND PUSH ROD REPLACEMENT  .
  14. Remove the cylinder head and the gasket. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD REMOVAL - LEFT  .
  15. Clean the engine block and the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
    NOTE: Clean all dirt, debris, and coolant from the engine block cylinder head bolt holes. Failure to remove all foreign material may result in damaged threads, improperly tightened fasteners or damage to components.
  16. Clean the cylinder head bolts and the engine block bolt holes.
  17. For further service to the cylinder head refer to the following:
