Speedometer Inaccurate Or Inoperative
NOTE:
After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) SYSTEM CHECK
under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) SYSTEM CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. If entire IPC is inoperative, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) INOPERATIVE . If just speedometer is inaccurate or inoperative, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Raise and support vehicle. Start engine. Place shift lever in Drive position (automatic) or third gear (manual) and allow drive wheels to spin. If speedometer indicates a vehicle speed, check for intermittent in wiring or connections. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If speedometer does not indicate a vehicle speed, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 16-pin engine harness-to-body harness connector C101. IPC connector. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at female side of 16-pin connector C101 terminal "N" (Dark Green wire). If more than 9.5 volts exists, go to step 7 . If 9.5 volts or less exists, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect IPC connector. Remove instrument cluster as necessary for access to IPC connector. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove IPC connector comb. Using DVOM, check continuity of VSS circuit between 16-pin connector C101 terminal "N" and IPC connector terminal A4. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step 9 .
- Connect DVOM between ground and IPC connector terminal A4. If continuity to ground exists on VSS input circuit, go to step 10 . If continuity to ground does not exist on VSS input circuit, go to next step.
- Check for poor connection at IPC connector. Repair as necessary and retest operation. If IPC connection is okay, go to step 15 .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Vehicle Control Module/Powertrain Control Module (VCM/PCM) Black connector. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Using DVOM, check continuity of Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) input circuit between 16-pin connector C101 terminal "N" and VCM/PCM Black connector terminal No. 16 (2.2L) or terminal No. 3 (4.3L). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step 11 .
- Connect DVOM between ground and VCM/PCM Black connector terminal No. 16 (2.2L) or terminal No. 3 (4.3L). If continuity exists, go to step 12 . If continuity does not exist, go to step 13 .
- Repair open in VSS circuit between 16-pin connector C101 terminal "N" and IPC connector terminal A4. Retest operation.
- Check for short to ground in VSS circuit wiring between 16-pin connector C101 terminal "N" and IPC connector terminal A4. Repair as necessary and retest operation. If short to ground is not found in VSS wiring, check for a fault in VSS related components. Disconnect each VSS related component one at a time and recheck circuit for short to ground. Repair as necessary and retest operation.
- Repair open in VSS circuit between 16-pin connector C101 terminal "N" and VCM/PCM Black connector terminal No. 16 (2.2L) or terminal No. 3 (4.3L). Retest operation.
- Repair short to ground in VSS circuit between 16-pin connector C101 terminal "N" and VCM/PCM Black connector terminal No. 16 (2.2L) or terminal No. 3 (4.3L). Retest operation.
- Check for poor connection at VCM/PCM Black connector terminal No. 16 (2.2L) or terminal No. 3 (4.3L). Repair as necessary and retest operation. If VCM/PCM connection is okay, go to next step.
- Replace and reprogram VCM/PCM. See COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - TRUCKS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest operation.
