Crankshaft & Main Bearings

  1. Ensure main bearing cap assembly is marked with arrow facing toward the front (timing belt side) of engine for reassembly reference before removing. See Fig 1.
  2. Ensure crankshaft journal diameter, taper and out-of-round are within specification. See CRANKSHAFT , MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. Upper main bearings contain oil grooves, while lower main bearings installe+d in main bearing cap assembly do not. Install main bearing cap assembly with arrow toward front (timing belt side) of engine.
  4. Coat main bearing cap assembly bolts with oil before installing. Tighten main bearing cap assembly bolts to specification in sequence. See, at the end of this article, TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See Fig 1.
  5. Ensure main bearing oil clearance and crankshaft end play are within specification. See CRANKSHAFT , MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Replace thrust bearing if crankshaft end play is not within specification.
