Timing Belt: Installation

- Remove spark plugs. Place cylinder No. 1 at TDC. Align timing marks on crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets. Refer to Fig. Fig 1. Rotate camshaft sprocket until 2 holes on sprocket hub align with camshaft bearing cap-to-cylinder head parting line. Small hole on camshaft sprocket must be at 12 o'clock position.
- Install timing belt. Ensure timing belt is installed in original direction of rotation. Install Timing Belt Tensioner Wrench (C-4703) horizontally on large hex of timing belt tensioner.
- Loosen timing belt tensioner bolt (if necessary) to reset timing belt tensioner to within a 15-degree axis of timing belt tensioner wrench horizontal position. See Fig 2.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 complete revolutions to TDC. Tighten timing belt tensioner bolt to specification while holding timing belt tensioner wrench in position. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
CAUTION:
DO NOT
rotate crankshaft counterclockwise or rotate engine using camshaft or intermediate shaft sprocket bolts.
