Cylinder Head: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Plymouth Voyager, 1995 Dodge Dakota, and 1995 Dodge Caravan. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system.
  2. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect necessary vacuum hoses, linkage, coolant hoses and electrical connections. Remove power steering pump and set aside. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
  3. Disconnect dipstick tube from thermostat housing and carefully rotate bracket from stud. DO NOT  bend bracket. Remove all drive belts. Remove A/C compressor with lines connected and set aside (if equipped).
  4. Remove alternator pivot bolt. Disconnect wiring and remove alternator. Remove A/C compressor idler pulley (if equipped). Remove bolts No. 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7 from solid mount A/C compressor bracket. See Fig 2.

  5. Remove nut No. 2 and remove (or loosen) bolt No. 3. Coolant will leak from bolt hole. Rotate solid mount A/C compressor bracket away from engine and slide on No. 2 stud until free.
  6. Remove upper timing belt cover. Using Sprocket Holder (C-4687) and Adapter (C-4687-1), hold camshaft sprocket and remove sprocket bolt. See Fig 3.
  7. Remove camshaft sprocket, maintaining camshaft, intermediate shaft and crankshaft timing with timing belt. If necessary, remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  8. Remove valve cover and curtain (if equipped). See Figure. Remove cylinder head bolts in proper sequence. See Fig 4. Remove cylinder head and gasket.
