Cylinder Head: Installation

- Hold a straightedge across threads of cylinder head bolts. Ensure cylinder head bolt threads contact straightedge in all areas. If threads fail to contact straightedge, cylinder head bolts are stretched and must be replaced.
- To install the cylinder head, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten cylinder head bolts to specification in proper sequence. Refer to, at the end of the article, TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Refer to Fig. Figure.NOTE: Cylinder head bolt torque should be greater than 90 ft. lbs. (122 N.m) after 1/4 turn. If torque is not as specified, replace cylinder head bolt.
- Adjust timing belt (if removed). See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Install curtain, manifold side first, with cutouts over camshaft towers and touching cylinder head.
- Press opposite (distributor) side into position below cylinder head rail. Curtain is retained in its location by bumpers. See Fig 1.
- When installing solid mount A/C compressor bracket, note bolt identification. See Figure. Tighten bolts in following order.
- Bolt No. 1 - 30 INCH lbs. (3.3 N.m)
- Bolts No. 2 and 3 - 40 ft. lbs. (54 N.m)
- Bolts No. 1, 4 and 5 - 40 ft. lbs. (54 N.m)
- Bolts No. 6 and 7 - 40 ft. lbs. (54 N.m)
