Aligning Balance Shafts

- With balance shafts installed in carrier, position carrier (if removed) on cylinder block, and install carrier bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Rotate both balance shafts until shaft keyways are facing upward (parallel to vertical center line of engine). Install short hub gear on sprocket-driven shaft. Install long hub gear on gear-driven shaft. After installing, ensure balance shaft keyways remain facing upward when alignment marks are together. See Fig 1.
- Install gear cover, and tighten double-ended stud to specification. Install crankshaft balance shaft chain sprocket. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing mark aligns with No. 1 main bearing cap parting line. Refer to Fig. Fig 2.
- Install chain over crankshaft sprocket, with upper nickel-plated link of chain aligned with timing mark on crankshaft sprocket. See Fig 2.
- Install balance shaft chain (lower) sprocket into timing chain, with timing mark (Yellow dot) of sprocket aligned with lower nickel-plated link on chain. See Fig 2.NOTE: Upper and lower nickel-plated chain links should align with timing marks of upper and lower chain sprockets respectively.
- With balance shaft keyways at 12 o'clock position, install balance shaft chain sprocket on nose of left balance shaft. Balance shaft may have to be pushed slightly inward to allow for clearance.NOTE: Balance shaft timing is correctly set when timing mark (Yellow dot) on balance shaft chain (lower) sprocket and lower nickel-plated chain link are aligned with cover arrow or notch. See Fig 2.
- Install sprocket bolts, and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust chain tension. See CHAIN TENSIONING.
